چکیده

putative calcium channel specific to sperm tails may be the best target yet for a male contraceptive. The protein, dubbed CatSper, was discovered in a homology search by David Clapham and colleagues of Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA. CatSper looks like a calcium channel, although Clapham could not detect a calcium current in transfected cells, probably because another component of the channel is missing. CatSper is, however, required for a calcium influx into sperm that is triggered by cyclic nucleotides. Such signaling events may be part of the process by which sperm either gain their initial motility in the epididymis, or augment that motility (in a process called hyperactivation) A

Raping and making love are different concepts: so are killing and voluntary euthanasia.

The distinction between 'kill' and 'help to die' is argued by analogy with the distinction between 'rape' and 'make love to'. The difference is the consent of the receiver of the act, therefore 'kill' is the wrong word for an act of active voluntary euthanasia. The argument that doctors must not be allowed by law to perform active voluntary euthanasia because this would recognise an infringemen...

INHIBITION OF14C UPTAKE BY CANDIDA ALBICANS: A NEW METHOD FOR INVESTIGATION OF INTRACELLULAR KILLING BY PHAGOCYTES

A radio assay employing 14C-uridine to measure the intracellular killing of Candida albicans by phagocytes is presented. The principle of this new method is that after killing of Candida albicans by phagocytes RNA synthesis stops and therefore uridine uptake is diminished whilst viable candida in cultures would take up uridine and as a result, high CPM counts can be obtained within 135 min...

Most people love animals and love eating meat. One way of reducing this conflict is to deny that animals suffer and have moral rights. We suggest that the act of categorizing an animal as 'food' may diminish their perceived capacity to suffer, which in turn dampens our moral concern. Participants were asked to read about an animal in a distant nation and we manipulated whether the animal was ca...

It is often said that love requires no manners or orders. However, it demands levels and features of wh...
